Revamped 2027 calendar will accommodate changes to Pan Am Games

Swimming Canada is announcing changes to its 2027 national competition calendar, in light of the new dates for the Pan American Games.

Panam Sports announced late last year that the Games – previously expected to take place in Sept. 2027 in Colombia – will be held from July 16-Aug. 1, 2027, in Lima, Peru.

The Canadian Swimming Trials, previously scheduled for June 4-10, 2027, will now be held April 5-10, remaining at Saanich Commonwealth Place in Victoria. This will allow time to select and prepare teams for both Pan Am Games and World Aquatics Championships, also taking place in summer 2027.

The Canadian Open, previously scheduled for April 8-10, 2027, will move to June 3-5, remaining at Edmonton Kinsmen Sports Centre.

“Although we previously announced a later Trials after a detailed review as part of the ‘Canadian Way’ plan to LA 2028, we need to accommodate a selection process for two separate senior national teams in summer 2027,” said High Performance Director and National Coach John Atkinson. “We are always looking to ensure the plans we have in place best serve the athletes and national program, and sometimes we have to consider adapting to changes in the international program. The change to the dates of Pan American Games created one of those cases where we have to adapt.”

After consulting with the High Performance Athlete Advisory Council and High Performance Coach Advisory Council, Atkinson shared the updates with a group of carded coaches, athletes and parents earlier today.

“We are adapting the ‘Canadian Way’ for the year 2027. This will allow us to select strong teams for both World Aquatics Championships and Pan Am Games, now both taking place during the summer,” Atkinson said.

Swimming Canada CEO Suzanne Paulins expressed her gratitude to Swimming Canada’s partners in facilitating the change.

“Thanks to our partners at the Canadian Olympic Committee for their consultations on this change, as well as our facility partners at Saanich Commonwealth Place and the Kinsmen Sports Centre, and the local organizing committees,” Paulins said. “This new schedule allows us to maintain the same locations originally scheduled for 2027, with major racing opportunities in the same April and June windows, while better equipping us for the changes in the international event calendar.”

The 2027 Parapan American Games will be held Oct. 8-17, 2027, in Lima.
