Officiating
Swim Natation Manitoba recognizes the role of volunteer officials and the continuous development of officials, from the club level to the international level. The professional development of volunteer officials is essential to the provision of competently officiated competitions in the support of goals of Swim Natation Manitoba.
Become an Official
The foundation of every great swimming competition is engaged and educated officials.
If you are interested in becoming a swimming official, it’s a great idea to start talking with your Officials Director at your local swim Club to see what the next steps would be.
TRAINING. CERTIFICATION. MAINTENANCE.
The goal of any volunteer or official is to contribute to a fair, safe and positive environement. The official’s job is to uphold the rules by applying them in a fair and impartial manner and communicating their interpretation effectively. Swim Natation Manitoba delivers the National Certification curriculum that, in a supported, planned and evaluated method, advances officials from the Club to the National level. Swimming Canada manages a supported strategy and structured mentoring program to advance senior National Level officials (referees and starters) and to promote senior officials from the National to International level.
Swimming Canada Officials Registration
Swimming Canada Natation has created a pathway guide to help you navigate your way through the process.
Certification procedures have been created for a level 1 to level 5 official as well as maintaining your certification.
Professional Development
The first 2 clinics that an Offical must take are: Intro to Swimming Officiating (Timekeeper) and Safety Marshal. These courses are both self-guided online e-modules. Once you have completed this requirment, you are considered a Level 1 “Red pin” Official. See the Swimming Canada Certification Pathway for Officials (revised Sept 2023) for more information.

The Manitoba Swim Officials Association (MSOA) represents registered and certified swimming officials in Manitoba. The MSOA is an advisory committee reporting directly to the Executive Director and also to Swim Natation Manitoba (SNM) Board of Directors through the Sport Committee. The MSOA is required to ensure the continued development of SNM officials through competition and to provide a forum for its members to discuss technical matters relating to competitive swimming rules.
